Appreciation

I attended a meet & greet tonight for our softball team.  As I listened to our head coach talk about her theme for the night, I couldn’t help but think, “how lucky are we to have her as our coach.”  Her theme was simple, yet impacting: appreciation.  She is appreciative for her players and their work ethic; of the fans and her support system of coaches and family.  She appreciates her job.  While it’s hard work that demands a lot of time, she is appreciative that she has the best job in the world.  There was never a doubt in my mind at her sincerity behind the words.  She is approachable, down-to-earth and has a very contagious way about her.  I got to see a serious side of her when she spoke of her team and the passion she gets from her job.  That’s just one part of her though.  She also has a feisty, funny side and that definitely was visible tonight.  I’ve witnessed a bit of it during the week when I see her at work.  She’ll give me that smirk or goofy look and I can’t help but smile.  While past awards and championships were brought up tonight, that’s not what she nor the program is about.  She’s about representing the university to the best of her ability…in a classy, proud and yet competitive way.  She knows it means something to be our coach.  She doesn’t hesitate to make sure her players know what it means to wear a jersey with our school’s name on it.  When she asked her players recently if they knew how lucky they were, they answered with, “Coach, we know.”

Appreciation….it’s such a simple thing to say “thank you” to those who support you.  Two words that may roll right off of one person but yet mean the world to another.  Appreciation, to me, is being grateful and humble and not forgetting how important the little things are in life.
